Tonight is the premiere of “The Out List”, a documentary by Timothy Greenfield-Sanders, featuring interviews with important LGBTQ voices today, including Twiggy Pucci Garcon!
Introducing the first trailer for work-in-progress documentary feature film “Gesture”!“ Gesture” is a cinematic journey into the underground NYC Kiki Scene, a ‘society within a society’ created and governed by LGBTQ youth of color. In the NYC area there are currently ten active Kiki “houses”, which by mimicking family structures serve to collectively empower and mentor their members (primarily African American and Latino individuals between 14-25). In events called Kiki balls performers create artful looks related to a theme to compete for a prize. “Mother” is on the top of the hierarchy and “Cunt” (to express femininity) is the highest form of praise. The face of HIV and AIDS activism today, the Kiki Scene is fighting a community HIV infection rate of near 50%. Following the tradition of self-organizing and resistance of the Black Power Movement, and providing an alternative to high-risk behaviors and support for a group that is a prime target of violence, racism and homophobia, the Kiki Scene serves as a model for other youth movements in the US and the world. GESTURE is a unique collaboration between an outsider (visual artist and documentary filmmaker Sara Jordeno) and an insider (Kiki house founder and community health specialist Twiggy Pucci Garcon) and the first film ever made about the young activist Kiki scene. The project is produced by Annika Rogell and Tobias Janson for Story AB (“The Black Power Mixtape”, “Tonight I fly”). Renowned DJ MikeQ is developing the film score specifically for the film, mixing historical and new beats.
Welcome to the website for the Gesture Project, a work-in-progress documentary and a cinematic journey into the NYC Kiki Scene, a ‘society within a society’ created and governed by LGBTQ youth of color, where femininity and flamboyance are celebrated and family and community leadership re-imagined. With unprecedented access, GESTURE takes the viewer to the community centers of NYC housing projects, to the streets of Harlem and to the Christopher Street Pier, where Kiki parents and leaders in their early 20’s meet to discuss how to help “the children” overcome the adversities that this young demographic (primarily African American and Latino LGBTQ individuals between 14-25) face. In the film members of the Kiki Scene share remarkable stories of survival and resilience through art and kinship.
GESTURE is born out of a unique collaboration between an outsider (artist and filmmaker Sara Jordenö) and an insider (Kiki house founder Twiggy Pucci Garçon). The film is produced by Annika Rogell & Tobias Janson for Story AB with an original score by DJ MikeQ. Expected première is in early 2015.
